Medical
knowledge and technology in eye care has advanced
tremendously. The use of sophisticated technology
has increased the cost of basic infrastructure
making eye care more costly. Therefore the underprivileged
can not access this due to lack of funds and
resources.
Eminent eye surgeon Dr. Kulin Kothari, Chairman
and Medical Director of ‘Bombay City Eye
Institute & Research Centre’ with
more than 25 years of ophthalmic practice behind
him understood this problem and driven by his
philanthropic and benevolent nature wanted to
help these people and bring smiles on their
faces and happiness in their lives.

"Despite
considerable efforts through National Program
for Control of Blindness (NPCB) in India, total
number of blind and visually disabled seems to
be growing, both as an effect of increase in population
and
ageing.
Over 18.7 million people in India are blind (Year
2003). Of these 14.7 million (78.6 %) live in
rural India.
Over 9.5 million people have cataract related
blindness and every year
additional 3 million become blind due to cataract
which is an easily
treatable condition."
