Medical
knowledge and technology in eye care has advanced tremendously.
The use of sophisticated technology has increased the
cost of basic infrastructure making eye care more costly.
Therefore the underprivileged can not access this due
to lack of funds and resources.
Eminent eye surgeon Dr. Kulin Kothari, Chairman
and Medical Director of ‘Bombay City Eye Institute
& Research Centre’ with more than 25
years of ophthalmic practice behind him understood this
problem and driven by his philanthropic and benevolent
nature wanted to help these people and bring smiles
on their faces and happiness in their lives.
He inspired Shri Jayantibhai Kothari and Mrs.
Minaxi Kothari to establish Bombay City Eye Institute
Charitable Trust (now Vision Foundation of India) in
the year 1993. In subsequent years several family friends,
philanthropists and like minded people extended their
hand and commitment to trust’s mission and increased
the trust’s activities many fold.
Dr. Kulin Kothari had a vision, a desire and single
minded perseverance of expanding the trust’s activities
in various states and later at national level. Its earlier
name (Bombay City eye Institute Charitable Trust) suggested
a localized entity, thus a change of name was desirable
in order to make it a national level organization. On
19th July 2005 the name of the trust was officially
changed to Vision Foundation of India (VFI).
Today at Vision Foundation of India our mission
is to restore the eye sight of those marginalized sections
of society. In the last few years VFI has created new
paths leading to restore the vision of these people.
