Reaching people where care is hardest to access

Vision Foundation of India runs a set of outreach programmes for communities that are often left out of regular eye care. Each programme responds to a different barrier, distance, affordability, early detection, or timely treatment, while keeping the focus on accessible, dignified care.
Across select programmes, VFI integrates tele-ophthalmology and AI-enabled tools to support early detection and continuity of care, especially in underserved regions.

Bal Drishti

A child’s vision plays a direct role in learning and overall development, especially in the formative years. Through Bal Drishti, VFI conducts school screening camps in municipal and private schools across India. Eye conditions identified during these camps are then medically treated by the Foundation so children can return to school with clearer sight and stronger confidence.

Primary Rural Vision Care Centres

This programme strengthens access to eye care in rural communities, with a particular focus on cataract. VFI works to make screening and support available in remote areas, including sustained outreach in the Manor and Shahpur districts of Maharashtra, ensuring rural families do not have to travel long distances for basic eye care.

Police Jyoti

Launched in 2005 by then Commissioner of Police Mr A N Roy, Police Jyoti supports the Mumbai Police and their families through eye camps held at police stations. VFI also conducts a special OPD session at its base hospital for police personnel and their families. Surgeries for police personnel are done free of cost, while treatment for family members is provided at highly subsidised rates.

Mobile Eye Clinics through Mobile Vans

In remote villages, limited infrastructure makes it difficult for people to reach even a rural centre. Through its mobile clinic model, VFI brings eye care closer to communities by taking screening and services to people’s doorsteps. Mobile vans, including the Revaben Tarachand Shah mobile clinic, help extend this reach to remote and tribal regions.
